Chester Watson – Phantom

What were you doing when you were 16? I think I was just starting to realise there were bands other than the ‘Red Hot Chili Peppers’ and my concept of hip hop was still defined by ‘Get Rich or Die Trying’ (fuck you fiddy). At 16, Chester Watson is blowing people’s minds.

In his track ‘Phantom’, the Florida rapper breathes assonance-laden phrases effortlessly over the eerie beat which is borrowed from an old MF Grimm track. His voice is lifeless in the best way possible; his rhymes float into ears like weed-smoke. Think DOOM before he perfected his punchline mastercraft.

Obviously most comparisons are going to be to ‘Earl’ and did you expect anything else? They have vaguely similar flows at a young age but Chester establishes a smooth mystery in contrast to Earls early assault. It’s about as blunted sonuding as a 16 year old can get.

Essentially this kid has a good few years headstart on anyone rapping at this level and he’s definatley generating buzz. I’ll be interested to see how he progresses on his own beats. This kid will undoubtedly have a group of 20-somethings wondering what the hell they’ve been doing all these years?

You digging Chester? He does sound like Earl though right? No? Comment
